How To Get Back Into Swimming After A Long Time Out

Getting back into any sport, and especially swimming after a long time out can be both exhilarating and challenging. Whether you are looking to get back into race shape or just hoping to rediscover the joy you once had for the sport here are some of our top tips to help you get back to your swimming best.

Go Slow

Going slow and steady is a sure-fire way to get you back to your best! It is very easy to push yourself too hard too soon and this is when injuries occur. As you have probably been out of swimming a long time your body won’t be in the same condition as when you swam before and it must be eased back into a regular swimming routine. Work gradually on regaining your full abilities and strength and then increase your swimming speed or distance with each passing week.

Be Consistent

Frequency is vital in order for you to be a great swimmer again. It can be difficult finding time and routine in your life, but swimming to a strict schedule on a regular basis will be invaluable in you rediscovering your form. If you only swim infrequently you may not make progress very quickly which can be demotivating. So, as the old saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect’, if you want to make swimming a big part of your world again then you will make the time for it.

Get a new Swimsuit

A new swimsuit will not only boost your morale but will also make your swimming more enjoyable. The more you love your new swimsuit, the more you will want to go swimming. So, find one in your favourite colour or with a fun design to give you that confidence and make you want to strut your stuff in the pool. Don’t forget to buy new goggles too!

Get a Training Partner

Nothing motivates more than going through something together. If you have a friend who’s a regular swimmer then team up with them for training sessions. Not only can you help mutually drag each other out of the house on those cold winter evening to go to the pool, but it will also help improve your lap times as you jostle for bragging rights until the next session. Partnering up with someone also helps make you feel less alone in the pool and can help you gain more interest in swimming and can be a shared passion.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Swimming requires energy. To make the most of your swimming and help you fuel yourself for the pool you should eat healthier foods and a well balanced diet. Obviously stay away from fast food and heavily processed food. This can make you sluggish and can have a negative impact on your body and be detrimental to your overall health. Make sure you ear something before and after heading to the pool to keep your body in tip-top condition for any exercise.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

Swimming is an exciting activity which can be enjoyed by anybody, regardless of age, ability, size or gender. Don’t focus on any insecurities or any doubts you may have. Think positively, stay focused, and swim to the best of your ability. The more you believe in yourself, the sooner you’ll be back to your previous swimming level and beyond.

We hope these tips help to motivate you and help get you back into swimming if you’ve been out of the water for a while.
