Getting back into any sport after a long time out can be both exhilarating and challenging, especially swimming. The pools are back open and there is no better time to get back in the water, swimming isn’t just a great choice for your physical health but also your mental health.
Here are some of our top tips to help you get back to your swimming best…
START SLOW
Slow and steady wins the race and is a sure-fire way to get you back to your best! Although you might feel unleashed from a long lockdown you shouldn’t push yourself too hard too soon. After a long break from swimming your body won’t be in the same condition as when you swam before and it must be eased back into a regular swimming routine. Work gradually on regaining your full abilities and strength and then increase your swimming speed or distance with each passing week.
BE CONSISTENT
Find the time to make swimming part of your routine. It can be difficult finding time in a busy schedule, but swimming on a regular basis will be invaluable in building back your form and working on your technique. Carving out 1-2 hours a week will make all the difference and move to closer to achieving your goals.
GET A NEW SWIMSUIT
Need a boost to your morale? A little nudge to get you excited for the pool? Why not grab yourself some brand-new swimwear? Go, find one in your favourite colour or with a fun design to give you that confidence and make you want to strut your stuff in the pool. Don’t forget to buy new goggles too!
BUDDY UP!
One of the biggest motivators in sport is team spirit. Whether you are training to compete or just looking to get fit, grab a buddy and bring them along to the pool. Motivate each other, drag each other out of the house on those cold winter evening and challenge each other to improve by setting better and quicker lap times.

HEALTHY DIET & DIGESTION
Swimming requires energy. To make the most of your swimming and help you fuel yourself for the pool you should eat a healthy and a well-balanced diet. Avoid foods that make you sluggish, like fast food or meals with lots of carbohydrates. Make sure you eat something before and after heading to the pool to keep your body in tip-top condition, allow 2-4 hours before you swim after eating a large meal and 30 minutes to an hour after a small snack - this will ensure your body has time for digestion.
KEEP A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE
Think positive, stay focused, and have fun! The more you believe in yourself, the sooner you’ll be back to your previous swimming level and beyond.
We hope these tips help to motivate you and help get you back into swimming if you’ve been out of the water for a while.
